Hacks for Sustainable Grocery Store Shopping During the Pandemic
The days of ‘running to the store’ have become a thing of the past
We have been living through the COVID-19 pandemic for several months now and it may finally feel as if we’re getting used to some of the changes. When the ‘stay-at-home’ orders were first introduced, grocery stores were one of the few shopping centres still open for business.
Laws and regulations continue to change on a weekly basis, which can make sticking to a routine difficult. Many stores will not let you bring reusable bags, forcing you to pack away your groceries in single-use plastic. Don’t let this knock you down, there are still sustainable choices you can make when visiting the grocery store. Some tips include:
- Come prepared with a shopping list
This will help you avoid wandering the store several times trying to remember what you need. If you come prepared, this will limit the number of stores you visit as you won’t forget anything!
2. Wear a mask
Wearing a mask protects you and those around you. Reusable masks are easy to find as many designers and local Toronto shops are selling them! One of our favourite sustainable fashion brands, Encircled is selling masks made from organic and sustainable materials.
If you live in Toronto, this tip is no longer optional! As of July 7, the City of Toronto passed a temporary bylaw requiring face coverings to be worn in an enclosed, public space.
3. Carry hand sanitizer
Keep hand sanitizer and sanitizing spray on hand to clean carts and baskets before using.
4. Support a bring-your-own container store
Though bring-your-own container grocery stores have gained popularity, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many of them to temporarily close their doors. Unboxed Market remains open for customers and Bare Market is available through online ordering.
If it’s your first time visiting these stores, call ahead or visit their website to learn more!
If the store you’re visiting allows you to bring your own bags, be sure to check out our favourite online store Clémentine Boutique. Clémentine Boutique offers sustainable kitchenware items and functional tote bags, perfect for your next outing!
Shopping for groceries during the pandemic can be done safely and sustainably as long as you plan ahead and go prepared!
